SHIMMER positions itself as a benchmark project in hydrogen integration with two presentations at EHEC 2026

SHIMMER gave two presentations at the European Hydrogen Energy Conference 2026 held in Seville (Spain) to discuss its results in terms of introducing hydrogen into the current gas infrastructure. On Thursday, March 12, the project took centre stage at the panel focused on hydrogen transport and distribution, demonstrating the relevance of our work.

Nilsah Ekici, Research Assistant in the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing offered a presentation called “SHIMMER Database for Hydrogen Integration in European Gas Grids”. This presentation summarised the work done in WP2 on developing a database for materials and components on existing infrastructure in Europe. The extracted results are key to organising technical information on European gas infrastructure to analyse how it can operate with mixtures of hydrogen and natural gas.

Right after, Ryvo Octaviano, Senior Scientist Energy Transition at TNO, took the stage with his presentation: “Flow Assurance of Hydrogen Blending in the Natural Gas Grid: A Case Study of the Spanish Transmission and Distribution Pipelines”. The presentation outlined the effect of blending hydrogen in two Spanish gas grids of Enagás and Redexis, both partners of the project. This task was delivered to meet one of the SHIMMER objectives, which is to develop operational guidelines for the safe injection of hydrogen into the natural gas network.
